Zoom iQ7 MS Stereo Microphone: A Compact Solution for iPhone and iPad Users
The Zoom iQ7 is a versatile mid-side stereo condenser microphone specifically designed for iOS devices equipped with a Lightning connector. Capable of capturing audio in high quality at 48 kHz/16-bit, this microphone is perfect for various applications, such as recording live music, interviews, and multimedia projects.
This compact microphone features a rotating capsule that allows it to be used in either vertical or horizontal orientation. This flexibility is ideal for video recording, as it ensures proper left-right stereo orientation, no matter how your device is positioned.
The iQ7 consists of two microphone elements: a directional "mid" mic that captures sound directly from the front, and a bidirectional "side" mic that picks up ambient sounds from the sides. Users can set the stereo width to either 90 or 120 degrees. Furthermore, it is possible to record the mid and side signals as raw data and adjust the stereo width later via Zoom's Handy Recorder iOS app. This app also enables phase-coherent mono recording, which is excellent for voice recordings and interviews.
Adjusting the input gain is simple, thanks to a prominent gain knob on the front of the device, complemented by 3-segment LED lights that help monitor sound levels. Additionally, the iQ7 comes with a dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack for real-time listening during recordings, and this output can double as a line output for backup recording purposes.
The iQ7 also includes a removable spacer, making it compatible with most iPhones, iPads, and iPods. It works seamlessly with Zoom's free Handy Recorder app, allowing recordings in PCM or AAC formats, as well as applying effects such as compression, EQ, and reverb. Moreover, it is compatible with Appleās Voice Memo app, GarageBand, and a wide variety of other applications that support external microphones.
